United States: On Tuesday, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City who was acting as an attorney, interrupted a federal judge to follow a court hearing saying that he cannot pay his bills because two Georgia election workers, who he owes $148 million, have seized his property.
Former NYC Mayor Claims Financial Ruin
Among these are Ruby Freeman, her daughter Wandrea Moss, and the former personal lawyer of President-elect Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, as reported by Reuters.
The two election workers received the $148 million by getting a verdict in a Washington, D.C. jury for suing Giuliani for defamation, claiming the former New York City mayor tarnished their reputations, stating that they assisted in trying to steal the 2020 U.S. presidential election for Trump.
Court Sanctions and Asset Seizures Escalate
Manhattan U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman had previously sanctioned Giuliani for civil contempt for his refusal to turn over his properties, including a Manhattan apartment in a bid to contribute towards the amount he owes.
During the proceedings, Giuliani’s lawyer, Joseph Cammarata, informed Liman that his client had provided 90% of the assets.
However, the judge dismissed Giuliani’s claim that he could not produce the paperwork required to turn over a 1980 Mercedes car, stating that Giuliani’s previous job as the US attorney for Manhattan was an indication of his ability.
Giuliani Lashes Out in Court
This made Giuliani, 80, take the floor and lament that the election workers had interfered with his daily life.
Your suggestion that I have not been diligent about this is entirely off base,” Giuliani said from the defense table pointing at the judge.
Liman then told Giuliani that he could not open his mouth in court again unless he was taking an oath and that his lawyer should do all the talking.
“Your client should have no higher duty at this time than to obey the court order. During such Periods,” Liman told Cammarata.
Upcoming Jury Trial and Denied Requests
The jury trial set for January 16 concerns whether Giuliani needs to give up property in Florida and fan items.
Liman denied Giuliani’s individual application to stay the trial in order for him to attend matters relating to Trump’s January 20 inauguration. According to Cammarata, Giuliani still speaks to Trump often.
“That does not make a due cause, Your Honour,” Liman said of the defendant’s social diary.
Legal and Professional Setbacks
Giuliani has lost his practicing license in New York and has not entered a plea on multiple criminal charges in both Georgia and Arizona related to baseless efforts to overturn the 2020 election on behalf of Donald Trump, as reported by Reuters.
Trump of the Republican Party was victorious in the Nov. 5 elections to secure his second term as the president, overcoming the Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.
