Federal Directive Shifts Control of California Water for Wildfire Response
The document highlights continuing conflicts about wildfire management responsibilities and resource management between federal agencies and state governments.

United States: President Donald Trump issued a directive on Sunday that authorized federal authorities to take control of California water management to strengthen firefighting operations, as reported by Reuters.
Blame Game Over Water Resources
The executive order emerged following Trump’s recent visit to Los Angeles, where his administration witnessed widespread destruction caused by multiple wildfires.
Trump inaccurately blamed Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, along with state officials, for denying water transport from northern California to aid fire suppression efforts.

Federal Overreach on State Laws
According to Trump’s directive, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation must implement plans to provide additional water and hydropower through the Central Valley Project infrastructure. The order overrides conflicting state and local legislation.
Newsom’s representative stated how their wildfire management would alter because L.A. retrieves the bulk of its water from diverse sources while continuing to stay shortage-free.
During the height of wildfires, certain hydrants in Los Angeles ran dry because they were not constructed for unprecedented catastrophic events, according to local officials.
Hydrant Failures and Misrepresentation
“Trump is either unaware of how water is stored in California or is deliberately misleading the public,” Newsom spokesperson Tara Gallegos said. “There is no imaginary spigot to magically make water appear at a wildfire, despite what Trump claims.”
Trump’s executive directive requires the White House budget office to check if it can impose requirements on federal financial assistance to compel state collaboration, as reported by Reuters.
