Ex-President Survives Assassination Attempt, Steals the Show at RNC

The 2024 presidential race continues to heat up with Trump’s dramatic return and legal arguments raising the stakes for an electoral struggle with Biden.

Ex-President Donald Trump

United States – Donald Trump gave a magnificent entry to conclude the first day of the Republican National Convention, earning a standing ovation from the Republican base just days after the president tender after surviving an assassination attempt that has altered the dynamics of the presidential campaign.

The former president entered Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee accompanied by loud cheers, his ear obscured by a bandage because he was shot just a few hours after he received formal endorsement for the party’s presidential ticket in 2024, as reported by Reuters.

Trump’s Triumphant Entry

‘Fight! Fight! Fight!’ cheered the supporters and raised their fists in a blatant reference to Trump’s own words uttered after he was shot. Surprisingly demure, Trump obliged the crowd with a wave from a box in which he was seated next to his newly elected VP, U. S Senator J D Vance.

The Pittsburgh Shooting Incident

The shooting at a Trump campaign rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, where one person was killed, now points to the increasing polarization prior to the November 5 election between Trump and Biden.

While Biden, who has focused his campaign on portraying Trump as a danger to the United States democracy, condemned the shooting, urging Americans to resolve their disagreements at the ballot box, not with guns.

Officials were still unable to properly determine the reason for the shooting rampage since the U. S. Secret Service killed the gunman.

Biden’s Campaign Response

NBC, in an interview that aired on Monday evening during the opposite of the convention, Biden said he erred by saying Trump should be put in the ‘bull’s eye’ last week but quickly went on to say Trump has often used violent rhetoric on the campaign trail.

Biden has directed an independent review to be done to try and establish how the gunman could have come near assassinating Trump given the tight security provided by the Secret Service.

Republican Convention Highlights

The four-day convention will climax with Trump’s speech Thursday in a prime-time address where he will formally accept the party’s nomination to take on Biden in his second presidential campaign.

The assassination attempt at the convention has forced Biden to the background after many weeks of speculation of his withdrawal from the race, especially after a terrible performance during a debate session held a month ago.

Biden again dismissed the notion Monday when grilled by NBC’s Lester Holt, choosing instead to highlight the number of misrepresentations that Trump let off during the debate. The president has increased his unscripted performances to attempt to do so in an effort to show that he is ready, but has not yet fully convinced some Democrats that he will be able to win the election.

Trump winning for Vance, the 39 years old author of the best-selling book “Hillbilly Elegy,” finalized the Ohio senator’s conversion from a critic of Trump to the president’s supporter.

Vance, who enjoys Trump’s penchant for political scrapping, should provide a fillip to core Republican voters, but it remains uncertain whether he can bring in the middle and upper-middle-class Republican and independent voters who shudder at the possibility of another Trump presidency.

Biden described Vance as a Trump ‘clone’ on Monday, and Democrats immediately seized on Vance’s anti-abortion stance, which the party has used to cut the Republican base down in the past.

During a Fox News telecast on Monday night, Vance said that he supports Trump on this issue, to allow states to decide whether or not to allow abortion.

Polls and Predictions

The battle between Trump and Biden is still tight in terms of the pollsters and voters, but Trump is slightly ahead in key swing states.

Monday started with the most recent in a series of legal triumphs for Trump: U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed federal charges in Florida involving the alleged theft of classified documents brought against him.

Trump is set to return for sentencing in New York in September for his attempt at concealing hush money that Stormy Daniels demanded a week before the 2016 election, as reported by Reuters.

However, the other two are on federal charges in Washington and state charges in Georgia – both for his attempts to subvert his 2020 election loss – have faced numerous delays and could be jeopardized after the U. S. Supreme Court in July held that he is shielded from prosecution for most of his activities as president.
