United States: Former U.S. President, Jimmy Carter has this weekend passed on while aged ninety-nine years and a few weeks.

CAMP DAVID ACCORDS

The Camp David Accords were concluded in 1978 between menachem begin –Israeli Prime Minister – and anwar sadat, Egyptian President. These agreements that Carter signed at the presidential cabin in Maryland paved way to the first peace treaty signed by Israel and its Arab neighbor, as reported by Reuters.

Begin received a Nobel Peace Prize along with Sadat in 1978. He was finally elected in 2002 on the ticket that, among other things, promised “a continuing and staunch commitment to the search for the peaceful settlement of international disputes.”

RELATIONS BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES

Despite the thaw in US-China relations lasting several years prior to Carter’s presidency, it was actually during his time in office that the two countries worked to overcome domestic opposition and announced, after months of covert diplomacy, their intent to formally recognize one another, thus beginning formal diplomatic relations in 1979.

IRAN HOSTAGE CRISIS

In 1979, Iranians stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and took 52 employees hostage as a result of displeasure by Iran of the US providing the Ivan leader a shelter. Carter appeared shabby in the eyes of the public after a military rescue operation that he ordered in April of 1980. The operation was a flop of more than eight US Soldiers who perished in a plane crash.

Fluctuations in energy prices and energy production started in the 1970s, and the Iranian revolution of 1979 signaled a major turning point in the operations of oil enterprises and cut down significantly the rate of production with a consequential rise in prices. This was actually evidenced by what happened in the summer of 1979 when mowers of cars had to spend hours at gas stations waiting for whatever amount of fuel was available to be dispensed out to them. Thus, Carter reacted to the problem by promising to reduce dependence on foreign oil and to increase efforts to conserve energy – yet the citizens’ trust was broken for good, as reported by Reuters.

ECONOMIC WOES

The candidate Carter’s re-election campaign in the year 1980 was, however, characterized by fear of a coming recession. His administration was able to understand inflation rates of over 14% by the year 1980, occasioned by high energy prices, as was experienced when there was a gas shortage in the year 1979. He and his advisers tried to fight inflation by raising interest rates above 17%, which led to a recession during the campaign for the presidency in 1980.
