Campaign Chaos: Biden’s ‘Garbage’ Comment Sparks Outrage
The mishap could be attributed to a tightening race for the presidency and a polarized American politics as more weeks of the race unfold.

United States: Joe Biden’s apparent bid to tag racist remarks from a public speaker at a campaign event supporting Donald Trump went wrong when Biden complimented Trump and other Republicans for calling their supporters ‘trash.’
Only days before a tense battle with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Trump that will determine who will be in charge of the world’s largest economy, Biden and his team at the White House were quick to try and limit more harm of the gaffe, as reported by Reuters.
Public Backlash Over Misquoted Remarks
The spat began when the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe insulted Puerto Rico as a ‘floating island of garbage’ during a rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday, one of several vulgar and racist comments made by Trump associates.
Attempt to Condemn Racially Charged Remarks
In a fundraising call on Tuesday, Biden said: “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s garbage – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American, “as transcribed by a White House spokesperson on X.
Many news outlets quoted this line but without the apostrophe as anger grew that Biden seemed to be telling Trump supporters they lived in their ‘garbage.’ More recently, the focus has shifted to the Biden campaign’s decision to suppress this audio during the first debate.
Biden also tried to clear up things on X.
“Earlier today, I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporters at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it,” he posted.
“His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
Tensions Rising as November Election Nears
But Yes! Republicans found Hillary Clinton’s remark on the supporters of Trump in 2016 as ‘deplorable.’ Clinton, in the end, lost him to Trump in the presidential election, which was a really shocking upset.
Trump, who is only one point behind Harris at 43%- 44% in the latest Reuters /Ipsos poll before the November 5 ballot, also responded to Biden’s comment.
Comparisons to Clinton’s 2016 ‘Deplorables’ Remark
“Now, on top of everything, Joe Biden calls our supporters ‘garbage’. You can’t lead America if you don’t love the American people,” Trump posted on X, as reported by Reuters.
His running mate, JD Vance, said: “This is disgusting. Kamala Harris and her boss, Joe Biden, are attacking half of the country.”
Vance had defended Hinchcliffe’s comment earlier: “We have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America.”
